Home Minister Imran Abdullah, the President of the Adhaalath Party, has refrained to comment on the suspension of Dr Iyaz Abdul Latheef from his MNU lectureship position. Dr Iyaz also serves on the Adhaalath Party Scholar's Council.
Many have expressed their concern about Dr Iyaz' suspension from his position due to a religious opinion that he had published. Even Dr Iyaz' political opponents have voically defended of the religious scholar.
Dr Iyaz had campaigned most vocally for Home Minister Imran's re-election to the Adhaalath Party presidency. He had defended the Home Minister, and had stated that the best candidate for the presidency was none other than Imran. Members of the Adhaalath Party have pointed out that Dr Iyaz has always conformed to whichever political stances that have been adopted by Imran.
Dr Mohamed Jameel Ahmed, the advisor to the opposition PPM, has described Dr Iyaz's suspension as a decision borne of political sectarianism. The former Chief Justice, Dr Ahmed Abdullah Didi had said that no religious scholar should be punished for expressing his religious verdicts and opinions.
Dr Iyaz has, directly and indirectly, criticised Dr Ahmed in the past on social media. The religious scholar had been suspended for contradicting the Islamic Ministry's verdict to practice physical distancing during congregational prayers. Many fatwa committees across the Muslim world have permitted the practice of physical distancing during congregational prayer given conditions of dire necessity.
