Maldives Correctional Service has stated it is attempting to shift convicts detained on suspicion of terrorism or extremism to a separate unit.
In an interview with online media Adhadhu, Commissioner of Prisons Ahmed Mohamed Fulhu stated that extremist offenders in August will be shifted to a newly established unit in Maafushi Prison.
He highlighted that there are currently about 40 to 50 convicts with extremist beliefs. “They are those convicted of grave crimes such as terrorism, or those detected by us”, said Ahmed.
The Commissioner of Prisons further stated that the unit was established in Maafushi Prison under special regulations and that operational procedures and rehabilitative measures are being drafted.
Corrections intend to conduct a special program for those with extremist beliefs and reintegrate them into society.
The Commission on Deaths and Disappearances has stated that extremist beliefs are being spread within jails.
