Opposition Calls for No Confidence in President Solih Because of Broken Promises

The Progressive Coalition has called for a motion of no confidence be filed against President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on the grounds that the government has not fulfilled any of its promises to the people.
During the debate on the Majlis floor over the motion of no confidence against Minister Maleeh Jamal, several Opposition parliamentarians said that instead of blaming individual Ministers for the unfulfilled promises of the government: a motion of no confidence should be filed against President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
MP Adam Shareef Umar, PNC VP, said that the MDP came to power after promising reductions in Internet prices. However, that promise has not been fulfilled, he said, even though half of the Presidential term has already passed. MP Umar accused the government of sacking Ministers to hide the government’s inability to fullfil the promises. MP Shareef said that even the MDP would agree that people unable to fullfil their duties should be sacked. If the MDP was working towards the best interests of the country and the people, then they would not be working to sack Minister Maleeh, said MP Umar.
“The vote should be taken regarding the President [Solih]. When he has been unable to uphold the law or fullfil his promises, this is what we believe needs to be done”, said MP Umar.
MP Mohamed Saeed of the PPM also reflected these sentiments. He said that the problems would be solved with President Solih’s resignation.
MP Hussain Mohamed Latheef also said that President Solih should take responsibility for his unfulfilled promises.
