The Educational Prerequisites of Majlis Members Must be Set and Standardised: Minister Maleeh

The educational level of Majlis Members needs to be set and standardised, said Mohamed Maleeh Jamal, Minister of Communications, Science and Technology.

Minister Maleeh said this while addressing the Majlis today regarding the motion of no confidence that had been filed against him.

When MP Hussain “Andhun” Shameem (South Henveiru) claimed that Minister Maleeh’s statements were irrelevant to his defence against the motion filed. Minister Maleeh quipped in response that this was why he always advocated for setting and standardising an educational standard for Majlis Members.

Minister Maleeh likely claimed this to point out MP Hussain’s inability to comprehend his argument.

There are no educational prerequisites to becoming a Member of the Majlis. An individual who is unable to read and write may also become a Majlis Member. The majority of Maldivian parliamentarians do not have sufficient educational qualifications.
