Drug Traffickers Given Life in Prison

Two people accused of trafficking drugs into the Maldives have been sentenced to life by the Criminal Court.
The convicted are Imran Wajdi (Zikura Villa, S. Feydhoo) and Ali Jibreel (Deyliyage, Malé). They were convicted based on the evidence gathered by the Police during a controlled delivery operation after they suspected that drugs were being secreted in documents that were sent through the Postal Service.
These operations make use of who intentionally buy and receive drugs who then, in turn, provide the Police information about other people involved.
Imran had retrieved the parcel from the Postal Service, he was arrested by the Police who waited with him in his house. Once Ali Jibreel arrived and attempted to take the package, the Police apprehended him in the act.
Once the house was searched under a legal warrant, the State demonstrated that the Police found 10.45 grammes of dimorphine in a wardrobe. Likewise, a mask found inside the wardrobe had both Jibreel and Imran’s DNA on it.
The State’s witnesses in the case were the Police officers who attended the scene and participated in the investigation, and the officers who prepared the analysis of the case. The defence’s claim that the evidence’s validity had expired was not accepted by the Court.
