Consultations Held on CITES Amberfish Exports

The Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources has held consultations with exporters on the export of amberfish sea cucumber, focusing on requirements under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).

The ministry said the meeting focused on implementing a “Non-Detriment Finding” (NDF) for the CITES-listed species. An NDF is used to establish that international trade in a listed species will not adversely affect its survival.

Officials also briefed exporters on the standards and procedures required for exporting amberfish, including the process for obtaining the necessary permits and licences.

The ministry said the consultations were aimed at ensuring that international trade involving the species complies with CITES requirements while supporting the sustainable use of the Maldives’ marine resources.

The Maldives has been a party to CITES since 2013 and enacted legislation in 2022 to regulate international trade in endangered species in line with the convention.
