Maldives launches agricultural grant and Islamic financing scheme for farmers

The Maldives has launched two initiatives aimed at supporting farmers and modernising the country's agricultural sector, including a grant programme for agricultural machinery and a revamped financing scheme based on Islamic finance.
The initiatives, the “Dhanduveri Manfaa” Agribusiness Machine Grant and the “Dhanduveri Nafaa” loan scheme, were officially launched by Fisheries and Ocean Resources Minister Ahmed Shiyam.
The second phase of the Dhanduveri Manfaa grant programme is targeted specifically at farmers in three atolls in the northern Maldives, according to the Ministry of Fisheries and Agriculture.
The ministry also announced changes to the Dhanduveri Nafaa loan scheme, which provides financial support to farmers. The scheme has been restructured to operate under an Islamic financing system.
The initiatives are intended to provide farmers with financial and technical support to improve agricultural production and increase income from farming, while promoting the modernisation of the sector.
The government expects the programmes to help strengthen agricultural activity in the northern atolls.
