A total of 633 tons of cargo was exported from the Maldives in July through the sea-to-air cargo service, according to figures released by Maldives Ports Limited (MPL).
The figure marks a sharp rise from June, when 335 tons were shipped through the same service, an increase of 88 percent. In container terms, the July volume amounted to 131 TEUs.
Cargo was sent to 10 countries via six airlines: Emirates, Etihad Airways, Qatar Airways, Saudia, Swiss Air and Turkish Airlines.
July also set a new record for transshipment cargo at Velana International Airport. According to Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), total transshipment cargo handled during the month exceeded 2,000 tons for the first time in the airport’s history.
The sea-to-air cargo service allows goods arriving by sea to be transferred and flown to other countries. It is jointly operated by MACL and MPL, with more than 17 airlines currently participating.
The government has highlighted the strong growth potential of the service, noting that the high number of international airlines operating to the Maldives creates significant opportunities for expansion.
