Government Moves Ahead with Nature Park Development on Ten Islands

The Government has commenced the development of nature parks on ten islands as part of its commitment to establish at least one nature park in every atoll.
The initiative is being led by the Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy, which opened applications in 2024 for islands interested in participating. The ministry said the programme received strong interest from councils nationwide, with proposals subsequently reviewed before selecting ten islands for implementation.
The selected islands include Molhadhoo, Kumundhoo, Landhoo, Huraa, Omadhoo, Kolhufushi, Kin’bidhoo, Gan, Kon’dey and Fiyoaree.
Consultations with island councils have been completed, and the concept and scope of development for each location have been finalised. The Government is currently in the process of signing agreements to provide grant support to councils for implementation.
The nature parks are expected to contribute to environmental conservation while preserving the natural beauty of the islands. The initiative is also aimed at supporting the expansion of guesthouse tourism and boosting local economic activity.
