Minister of Economic Development, Transport and Trade Mohamed Saeed has stated that more than 2,500 containers currently stranded in Sri Lanka will be transported to the Maldives next week, as efforts continue to address disruptions in global shipping routes.
Speaking at a press briefing held at the President’s Office, the Minister said the delays were linked to shifts in global shipping patterns amid ongoing tensions in the Middle East. He noted that Maldives Ports Limited is working to ease challenges in the transport of goods and reduce pressure on supply chains.
The containers are expected to be delivered on three vessels scheduled to arrive over the coming week. Minister Saeed said the move is aimed at clearing existing backlogs and stabilising the flow of goods into the country.
Providing an update on trade trends, the Minister said imports have increased by approximately 19 to 20 percent so far this year compared to previous years. He also noted that the price index of staple food items rose by 1.95 percent in March compared to the same period last year.
However, prices of fruits and vegetables have declined, with vegetable prices falling by around 5 percent and fruit prices decreasing by 15.56 percent compared to last year.
