Government to Consult Stakeholders Before Deciding on Taxi Fare Changes

Minister of Economic Development, Transport and Trade Mohamed Saeed has stated that any changes to taxi fares will be implemented only after extensive consultations, as the Government reviews concerns raised by drivers.
Speaking at a press briefing held at the President’s Office, the Minister said requests for fare revisions have been submitted by taxi drivers, particularly in response to rising global oil prices linked to developments in the Middle East. He noted that the matter requires careful assessment before any decision is taken.
Minister Saeed said the issue will be discussed at Cabinet level, alongside broader engagement with stakeholders, including taxi drivers and service operators. He added that consultations will focus on evaluating the impact of potential changes and identifying an appropriate course of action.
He also highlighted that the integration of economic and transport portfolios is aimed at improving sector management and service delivery. Efforts are currently underway to expand digital services within the transport sector, building on systems already in place under the ministry.
Citing vehicle registration as an example, the Minister noted that the process currently takes between 19 to 20 days at best, and up to two to three months in some cases, underscoring the need for greater efficiency. He also pointed to challenges in enforcing existing taxi and transport regulations, stating that policies must be both effectively implemented and refined where necessary.
The Minister added that consultations will be conducted across regions and cities nationwide to better understand issues within the transport sector and work towards sustainable solutions.
