The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has secured the contract to construct a new tertiary-level building at Kulhudhuffushi Regional Hospital, a major step toward elevating healthcare services in the northern atolls.
The agreement was formally signed at the Ministry of Health. State Minister for Health Ismail Abdulla represented the ministry, while MTCC Deputy Managing Director Ahmed Shareef Abdul Rahman Yoosuf signed on behalf of the company.
The signing ceremony was attended by South Kulhudhuffushi MP Farhath Mohamed and Kulhudhuffushi Regional Hospital Chief Executive Officer Nazima Ali.
The project will be executed in two distinct phases:
- Phase 1: Relocation of critical services, including the operating theatre, Central Sterile Supply Department (CSSD), and other essential departments, to alternative locations within the existing hospital premises to enable uninterrupted patient care during construction.
- Phase 2: Construction of the new tertiary-level building, designed to upgrade the hospital’s capabilities to deliver advanced tertiary healthcare services.
Kulhudhuffushi Regional Hospital serves as the primary healthcare provider for the northern region, covering residents of Haa Alifu and Haa Dhaalu atolls as well as nearby islands. The government has emphasized that transforming the facility into a tertiary-level hospital is a key priority to improve access to specialized medical care and reduce the need for patients to travel to Malé for advanced treatment.
This development aligns with ongoing national efforts to decentralize and strengthen healthcare infrastructure across the Maldives’ atolls.
