Maldives Reaches 200,000 Tourist Arrivals Milestone in Record Time for 2026

The Maldives has welcomed over 200,000 tourists so far this year, marking the fastest year on record to achieve this milestone, according to the latest statistics released by the Ministry of Tourism and Environment.
As of 28 January 2026, a total of 200,801 tourists had arrived in the country, reflecting a 3.9 per cent increase compared to 193,174 arrivals during the same period in 2025. The highest single-day arrival figure this month was recorded on 11 January, when 9,596 tourists entered the Maldives. Current data shows an average of 7,171 tourists arriving per day.
Velana International Airport continues to serve as the primary entry point for visitors. Among secondary gateways, Maafaru International Airport has recorded the highest number of arrivals so far this year, with 714 tourists entering through the facility.
Russia has emerged as the leading source market, contributing 26,965 tourists and overtaking China, which previously held the top position in recent years. However, arrivals from China are showing rapid growth, with 18,531 Chinese tourists recorded to date. The Ministry anticipates that China is likely to regain its position as the top source market in the coming months.
Tourist arrivals are expected to continue rising as the peak season progresses. February has historically recorded the highest monthly arrivals in recent years, and similar trends are anticipated for 2026.
