Tremors Felt in Maldives Following 6.2 Magnitude Earthquake Near Nicobar Islands

The Maldives Meteorological Service (Met Office) reported that tremors were felt in Malé and Hulhumalé following a 6.2 magnitude earthquake near India’s Nicobar Islands late last night.
The earthquake occurred at 11:41 PM Maldives time, and the seismometer in GDh. Kaadedhdhoo recorded tremors around 11:48 PM. Despite the tremors, the Met Office assured that no additional risks are expected for the Maldives.
This event follows a 6.3 magnitude earthquake in the Bay of Bengal near the Andaman and Nicobar Islands on July 29 at 12:11 AM, with a depth of 10 kilometres, according to India’s National Center for Seismology. No damage or injuries have been reported.
The recent seismic activity follows minor tremors experienced in Delhi on July 22 and a 3.2 magnitude quake in Faridabad earlier that month. In response, India’s National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) plans to conduct earthquake mock drills in the Delhi-NCR region between July 29 and August 1.
