President Proposes Extension of Children’s Ombudsperson’s Term

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has submitted a proposal to the People’s Majlis seeking to extend the term of Children’s Ombudsperson Niumath Shafeeg for an additional five years.
The proposal has been forwarded to the Parliament’s Human Rights and Gender Committee for evaluation. Shafeeg, originally appointed to the position on July 23, 2020, with Majlis approval, is nearing the end of her initial five-year term, which expires on July 23, 2025.
The Children’s Ombudsperson is tasked with monitoring state institutions’ adherence to the Child Rights Protection Act and ensuring compliance with the Convention on the Rights of the Child. Responsibilities also include overseeing and evaluating the work of institutions and personnel engaged in child rights protection and conducting related investigations and studies.
The role carries a salary of MVR 25,000, with an additional MVR 10,000 allowance, bringing total monthly compensation to MVR 35,000.
