Maldives to Establish Three New Shelters for Domestic Violence Victims

Minister Aishath Shiham.
The Maldives government has announced plans to establish three new shelters, termed "Domestic Violence Shelters," to provide temporary housing and support for women who have experienced abuse. The initiative, revealed by Minister of Social and Family Development Dr. Aishath Shiham in an interview with state media, aims to address the growing need for safe spaces for victims of domestic violence across the country.
Minister Shiham emphasized the urgency of the initiative, noting that the Maldives currently operates only one shelter for domestic violence victims. "Based on the number of cases reported to the Ministry, there is a clear need for additional shelters," she stated. The Minister confirmed that preparations are underway to establish three new facilities in different parts of the Maldives to enhance support for survivors.
The announcement aligns with a broader commitment outlined by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu during his Presidential Address at the opening of Parliament earlier this year. President Muizzu revealed that the government plans to develop temporary shelters to offer interim protection for domestic violence victims. He specified that work on the first of these shelters will commence in Addu City, with services expected to begin within the next year.
In addition to expanding shelter infrastructure, the government is prioritizing prevention through awareness and education. President Muizzu announced plans to conduct training programs targeting 500 youth in 2025. These programs aim to equip young people with the skills and knowledge to advocate against gender-based and domestic violence, fostering a new generation committed to prevention efforts.
The establishment of the new shelters and the accompanying awareness initiatives reflect the Maldives’ commitment to addressing domestic violence and supporting survivors. As preparations for the shelters progress, the government aims to strengthen its social safety net and promote a safer environment for women across the nation.
