FAO Assures Office in Maldives, Pledges Further Support for Fisheries Sector
The Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Qu Dongyu, has assured the establishment of a dedicated FAO office in the Maldives and expressed commitment to further supporting the country’s fisheries sector.
This assurance was made during a meeting held with the Maldives Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources, Ahmed Shiyam, on the sidelines of the third United Nations Ocean Conference.
During the meeting, Minister Shiyam expressed appreciation for FAO’s continued support and collaboration, particularly highlighting assistance provided for implementing the Anchored Fish Aggregating Devices (FADs) project in the Maldives.
The two sides also discussed expanding FAO’s technical support, including the development of a comprehensive marine law and increasing investment in mariculture to ensure long-term sustainability and economic growth in the fisheries sector.
FAO Director-General Qu Dongyu previously paid an official visit to the Maldives in 2022. That visit included discussions with key government stakeholders on enhancing agricultural productivity, improving national food security, strengthening the rural economy, and advancing sustainable development goals.
The establishment of a formal FAO office in the Maldives is expected to bolster coordination on joint projects and enable more focused assistance in marine resource management and food system resilience.
