The Maldives Meteorological Service (MET) has revealed that a new weather radar system is being installed in Addu City, marking a major step toward enhancing the country’s weather monitoring capabilities.
Speaking on a program by Public Service Media (PSM), MET Office Assistant Meteorologist Hussein Waheed noted that, at present, the Maldives operates only one weather radar located at the National Meteorological Service headquarters in Hulhulé. The installation in Addu City will be the second of its kind in the country.
“This is a significant advancement for the MET Office. We hope to eventually link the entire Maldives through a network of weather radars,” Waheed said.
The radar system being installed is a Doppler weather radar, cutting-edge technology used by developed nations to monitor weather patterns in real-time. This radar can detect key information such as rainfall areas, intensity, cloud movements, and wind velocity.
As part of a broader effort to strengthen national weather infrastructure, the MET Office also announced plans to open a sixth weather observatory in N. Mafaru. The Maldives currently operates five observatories in Hulhulé, HDh. Hanimaadhoo, L. Kadhdhoo, GDh. Kaadedhdhoo and Addu City Gan.
In addition to radars and observatories, automated weather and tide monitoring stations have been set up in 20 islands across the country, forming part of a growing nationwide climate observation network.
