The Maldives has been elected as a Vice President of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), a significant diplomatic milestone for the country. The elected term will commence in September 2025.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu expressed pride in the achievement, stating, "We want to work closely with our partners to achieve success in the 80th session of the UN General Assembly."
This announcement comes as the Maldives celebrates its 60th anniversary as a UN member state. Marking the occasion, President Muizzu reaffirmed the country’s commitment to international cooperation, saying, "As we celebrate 60 years of UN membership, we will remain committed to strengthening the multilateral system."
The Vice Presidency of the UNGA is one of the highest roles within the organization and provides a platform for member states to influence key global discussions and decisions. The Maldives' election to this position reflects its growing presence and active engagement in international diplomacy.
