The Maldives has been elected as a member of the Executive Board of the United Nations Committee of Experts on Global Geospatial Information Management for Asia and the Pacific (UNGGIM-AP) for the 2025–2028 term.
Mohamed Shafee, Director General of the Geomatics Department at the Ministry of Finance, was unanimously elected to the position during the 14th plenary meeting of UNGGIM-AP held in South Korea. Representatives from Armenia, Australia, Fiji, Iran, Japan, Malaysia, Mongolia, Pakistan, Russia, and Tonga were also elected to the board.
This marks the first time the Maldives has secured a seat on the GIMAP Executive Board. The Foreign Ministry said the country will play a leading role in enhancing cooperation among Asia-Pacific nations in the field of geospatial information.
The UNGGIM-AP Executive Board consists of 15 members, including two co-chairs and three vice-chairs, and is responsible for planning and implementing the committee’s activities. The organization brings together 56 member states from the Asia-Pacific region to coordinate the development and management of geospatial information in line with global standards set by the United Nations.
