The Maldives has issued a strong call for an immediate end to attacks on healthcare facilities and workers in Gaza, denouncing the ongoing humanitarian crisis during its intervention at the 78th World Health Assembly—the world’s largest annual health forum.
Speaking during the Palestinian intervention, Maldivian Health Minister Abdullah Nazim expressed deep concern over the continued violation of international humanitarian law, citing the destruction of Gaza's health infrastructure, displacement of civilians, and repeated assaults on medical personnel and aid operations.
Minister Nazim emphasized that the people of Gaza have been deprived of their most basic rights to survival, noting that these conditions have been exacerbated by blockades that prevent the entry of essential humanitarian aid, including food, fuel, medical supplies, and vaccines. He specifically highlighted the urgent need for mental health support and children’s health services in the region.
In his remarks, Nazim condemned what he described as Israel’s genocidal attacks on Gaza, calling on international organizations and UN member states to take immediate action to stop the violence and ensure humanitarian access.
"The Maldives firmly stands with Palestine and will continue to do everything in its capacity to support this cause," Nazim affirmed. He further stated that the protection of human rights must be upheld universally, regardless of nationality or ethnicity.
According to recent reports, 38 more individuals were killed in Gaza on the same day of the Maldives’ intervention, intensifying the urgency of the call to action.
