Researchers Discover New Fish Species in Maldivian Waters

A previously unknown fish species has been identified in the Maldives, discovered by researchers conducting an extensive marine biodiversity survey. The project, supported by the Rolex Perpetual Planet Initiative, has now yielded its second major finding.
The newly identified species, named 'Plectranthias raki', belongs to the Plectranthias genus and was found at reef depths ranging from 100 to 125 meters. Researchers chose the name 'raki' to reflect the fish’s tendency to dart away swiftly when approached.
The Plectranthias genus is widely studied by marine researchers, comprising 57 recognised species such as the 'Plectranthias ahiahiata' (sunset perchlet), 'Plectranthias kami', and 'Plectranthias maculicauda' (spot-tail perchlet). While fascinating to study, these fish are harmless to humans and play a crucial role in their ecosystems.
This discovery underscores the Maldives’ status as a global hotspot for marine biodiversity. Such findings highlight the need for ongoing research and preservation efforts to protect the region’s unique underwater ecosystems.
This marks another significant step in documenting the diverse marine life thriving in Maldivian waters.
