President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has officially inaugurated Muli Airport in Meemu Atoll, marking the completion of a long-awaited infrastructure project aimed at driving regional development.
At the opening ceremony, President Muizzu described the airport as a transformative project for Muli and surrounding islands. "This airport will bring development progress to this island. It will be an economic gateway for economic advancement," the President said.
He revealed that over MVR 100 million had been spent on project variations, highlighting the significant investment made in ensuring the airport's completion.
Deputy Speaker of Parliament and Dhiggaru MP Ahmed Nazim also addressed the gathering, emphasizing the importance of the airport to the atoll. "This airport has been opened today after 11 years through very hard work. This government has opened the airport after 18 months of work," he said, crediting multiple parties for their efforts.
Nazim further stated that Muli Airport would inject new energy into the region and contribute to long-term economic growth.
The airport, which is domestic, includes a 1,500-meter runway built on 36 hectares of reclaimed land. The government spent over MVR 300 million on the project. A test flight landed at the facility on April 25, and technical assessments have since been completed. Approximately 40 staff members will be employed as operations begin.
