Muli Airport is set to officially open this Thursday during President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s visit to the region. Developed on reclaimed land, the airport features a 1200-meter runway and marks a significant milestone in the Maldives’ efforts to expand regional air connectivity.
Prior to the inauguration, a successful test flight was conducted last Friday, with a Dash-8 aircraft operated by the national airline, Maldivian, landing at the airport to complete necessary operational assessments.
The Muli Airport project was awarded to the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) on February 28, 2021, at a cost of MVR 212 million. Although initial progress faced delays due to financial constraints, the development work has now been completed and the airport is ready for commercial operations.
Muli Airport is expected to greatly enhance transportation accessibility for residents of Muli and nearby islands, while also unlocking economic opportunities across the region. With more than a dozen domestic airports already operational in the Maldives and additional projects underway, the country continues to prioritize investments in transportation infrastructure to support economic development and regional connectivity.
