President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the opening of the new domestic airport in Muli, Meemu Atoll, will unlock economic opportunities for the entire atoll and drive development across multiple sectors.
Speaking at the official opening ceremony of Muli Airport, the President revealed that although the project began 14 years ago, many components remained incomplete when his administration took office. He noted that an additional MVR 100 million was required in variation costs to complete the airport.
“This airport will definitely bring significant development to this island. It will serve as a gateway for advancement in many sectors,” said President Muizzu, emphasizing that the airport’s completion was the result of the combined efforts of many parties.
The President highlighted that the airport’s opening is a key milestone in fulfilling his campaign promise to boost tourism in Muli. He added that land reclamation and tourism-related development in the lagoon will proceed in partnership with the Ministry of Tourism.
During his remarks, President Muizzu also reiterated several other major development commitments for Muli:
- Muli Road Development Project: The agreement has been signed, with full implementation scheduled within 2026.
- 300 Housing Units: A housing project has been greenlit for Muli.
- New Hospital: Preparations are underway to begin construction.
- Naalaafushi-Muli Link: A project to connect the two islands will begin during this trip.
- Naalaafushi Land Reclamation & Harbor Expansion: Work is scheduled to begin next year.
