Maldives Invites Contractors for 57-Island Public Housing Project

The Maldivian government has officially invited contractors to design and construct over 12,000 housing units across 57 islands under its Public Housing Project, a key initiative aimed at addressing the country's housing shortage.
The Ministry of Finance and Planning, on behalf of the Ministry of Construction, Housing, and Infrastructure (MCHI), announced that bidding will take place through Open National Competitive Bidding and International Competitive Bidding processes.
Project Breakdown and Bidding Categories
Contractors can bid for the project under four categories, each with different eligibility criteria:
- Category 1: Islands with 50 or fewer housing units (Only local contractors can apply).
- Category 2: Islands with 51-150 housing units (Open to both local contractors and joint ventures between local and international firms).
- Category 3 & 4: Islands with 200-300 or more housing units (Open to international contractors, who can apply independently without a joint venture).
The distribution of housing units is as follows:
- 18 islands will receive fewer than 50 units.
- 17 islands will have 51-150 units.
- 10 islands will get 200-250 units.
- 12 islands will have 300 or more units.
Government’s Housing Commitment
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has pledged to develop 20,000 housing units in the north and south of the country, making housing a key priority for his administration.
The government has allocated USD 162.1 million for housing projects in the 2024 state budget, with USD 64.9 million specifically dedicated to housing infrastructure development.
