The Managing Director of Regional Airports Company Limited (RACL), Ahmed Mubeen, has announced that the first airport being developed in Meemu Atoll, located in M. Muli, is expected to be completed by March, with a test flight scheduled for March 1st.
Mubeen shared these details during a PSM News program, emphasizing that the goal is to finalize the airport's construction by March. He explained that preparations are ongoing, including the acquisition of vehicles, machinery, and resources, as well as completing the office area and training personnel for firefighting duties.
The airport development project, which involves land reclamation in Muli, was awarded to Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) in 2021 for 212 million rufiyaa. The original plan aimed to complete the project and begin operations by mid-2023, but various delays have pushed the timeline back.
MTCC’s Managing Director, Ahmed Saudi, previously stated that despite the delays, the company is now focusing on completing the remaining work. The dredger, Maha Jarrafu, is stationed on the island to assist with additional land reclamation, terminal completion, and lighting installation. Saudi also highlighted that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's goal is to have the airport operational, with flights landing and services available, by the end of February.
