The national airline, Maldivian, has resumed scheduled flights to Kooddoo Airport in Gaafu Alif Atoll after the airport reopened following extensive runway renovations. The renovations addressed long-standing infrastructure issues that had previously forced Maldivian to suspend flights in early September.
Transport Minister Mohamed Ameen highlighted that the runway’s deteriorated condition had led to damages on two Maldivian aircraft serving the Kooddoo route, resulting in their grounding. He assured that collaborative efforts with the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), air operators, and relevant authorities are ongoing to improve safety and reliability for domestic routes.
With the renovations now complete, Maldivian has commenced two daily flights to Kooddoo, restoring vital connectivity for residents and tourists traveling to this southern atoll. Kooddoo Airport, inaugurated in 2012, last underwent renovations in 2017 to support larger aircraft operations.
