The Business Center Corporation (BCC) has confirmed that the development of a garment factory in Addu City is progressing as planned, dismissing recent allegations on social media suggesting the project’s suspension.
In June, BCC signed an agreement with the Addu City Council to allocate a 30,000 square foot parcel of land for the factory. By September, BCC announced its search for investors to support the project. The initiative, led by the Ministry of Economic Development, aims to reduce garment imports, create employment opportunities, and drive economic and industrial development in Addu City, in alignment with President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's administration’s goals.
Responding to the allegations, BCC Managing Director Ibrahim Ziyau Mohamed clarified that BCC has formally requested an alternative land plot from the Addu City Council. This request follows the designation of part of the originally allocated land for another project, which could result in the forfeiture of a portion of the land initially allocated to the factory. Mohamed assured that the corporation remains prepared to proceed with construction as soon as a new plot is assigned.
“The project will continue as planned, and BCC is ready to commence physical construction immediately upon receiving the new land plot,” Mohamed stated, adding that the corporation is committed to completing the factory as soon as possible.
The garment factory project seeks to provide opportunities for individuals in the clothing and garment sector, including improved marketing services. It is part of BCC’s broader mandate to support small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) by fostering a supportive business environment and maintaining a centralised SME database.
