Former Minister of Construction and Public Infrastructure, Mohamed Mauroof Jameel, has been appointed as the new Managing Director of the Housing Development Corporation (HDC), following the resignation of Ibrahim Fazul Rasheed on 21 December. The HDC is responsible for developing and managing housing, real estate, and infrastructure projects across the Maldives.
Jameel, a well-respected architect and independent researcher specializing in the architectural heritage of the Maldives, brings a wealth of experience to his new role. He previously played a key role in the development of Hulhumalé during his tenure as Construction Minister. His appointment follows Rasheed’s resignation, which came after his suspension amidst a police inquiry into allegations of mismanagement regarding the distribution of land plots under the 'Binveriya' housing schemes.
In an additional development, on 19 December, the Privatization and Corporatization Board (PCB) suspended the entire board of directors of HDC, excluding the chairperson, as part of ongoing investigations into the matter.
Jameel’s appointment is expected to bring new leadership to HDC during a critical time for the corporation.
