The Maldives Police Service has introduced a new online portal to help the public submit information and evidence related to the ongoing investigations into the alleged mismanagement of flats and land plots allocated under the Gedhoruveriya and Binveriya housing schemes.
In a statement shared on social media, the Police Service urged citizens to utilize the portal, evidence.police.gov.mv, to provide any information or evidence that could aid in the investigation. The Police emphasized that all submissions would be kept confidential, and individuals could choose to remain anonymous if they wish.
This action comes in response to allegations regarding the improper distribution of housing units and land plots by the Housing Development Corporation. The accusations suggest that certain Housing Development Corporation staff may have allocated flats and land plots to individuals who were not eligible.
As part of the ongoing investigation, the Privatization and Corporatization Board decided to suspend the board of directors of the Housing Development Corporation on December 19, with the exception of the chairperson. Those suspended include Managing Director Ibrahim Fazul Rasheed, along with board members Azhar Abdulla Saeed, Ibrahim Yoosuf Fulhu, Muhammad Visham, Ula Mohamed Rasheed, Arif Abdul Samad, Mohamed Naajil, Mohamed Waheed, Fathmath Mizna Ali, and Yoosuf Waheed.
The Privatization and Corporatization Board explained that these suspensions were necessary to support the investigation and would remain in effect until further notice.
In response to the suspension, Ibrahim Fazul Rasheed resigned from his position on Saturday, citing his desire to assist the police and other relevant authorities in their inquiries, while also ensuring the continued implementation of government policies.
In connection with the investigation, Mohamed Fazeel Rasheed, the Deputy Managing Director of the Malé Water and Sewerage Company Private Limited and the brother of Ibrahim Fazul Rasheed, has also been suspended. Other institutions are conducting their own investigations into the issue.
