Elections Commission Initiates Dissolution Process for PPM

The Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM) has officially commenced the process of dissolving the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), following the party's decision to disband itself.
PPM, originally founded by former President Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom and registered on 27 October 2011, has undergone notable changes in leadership and operations over the years. The party most recently functioned as part of a coalition with the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC).
In an extraordinary Senate session held on 2 December, PPM’s leadership voted to dissolve the party. The decision was attributed to the impracticality of managing PPM under a separate leadership structure while operating in alignment with the ideologies and policies of PNC.
The ECM confirmed that it is now carrying out the procedures necessary to formalize the dissolution in accordance with Article 61 of PPM’s Constitution and the Political Party Act. The commission has clarified that PPM can no longer function or communicate as a political party, except in matters directly related to its dissolution. Pending issues or decisions must also be addressed before the formal process is completed.
This marks the end of over a decade of PPM’s presence in the Maldivian political landscape, closing a significant chapter in the nation’s political history.
