Maldives Police Service has launched an online payment system for fines related to the use, sale, and possession of vaping devices and e-cigarettes, following amendments to the Tobacco Control Act.
In a press release, the Police reaffirmed their commitment to enforcing the new regulations and issued a stern warning to those engaging in the sale, distribution, or sharing of electronic cigarettes and vaping products. Individuals found in violation will receive a notification via text message, which includes a secure Vaaru Pay link for online payment of fines.
The Police also called on the public to adhere to the revised Tobacco Control Act, emphasizing that collective efforts are crucial for fostering a healthier, tobacco-free society.
The new regulations, effective from December 15, 2024, impose strict penalties for violations:
- Importing vaping devices: MVR 50,000 fine, with an additional MVR 10,000 per device or product.
- Selling vaping devices: MVR 20,000 fine, plus MVR 10,000 for each unit sold.
- Possession or use of vape products: MVR 5,000 fine.
- Selling or distributing vape products to minors: MVR 50,000 fine.
The Maldives Police Service’s introduction of the Vaaru Pay system simplifies the payment process for fines, ensuring compliance and streamlining enforcement of the Tobacco Control Act.
