MET Issues Weather Advisory as Maldives Transitions to Northeast Monsoon

The Maldives Meteorological Service (MET) has announced significant weather changes as the nation transitions from the Hulhangu (southwest) monsoon to the Iruvai (northeast) monsoon. This seasonal shift is expected to bring intensified winds, thunderstorms, and turbulent seas in the coming days.
The current weather patterns are influenced by a storm that formed over the Bay of Bengal on December 16, 2024, and another storm developing near Tamil Nadu, southern India. Combined, these systems are forecast to bring stronger winds to the Maldives from December 18, lasting for at least five days.
Forecast Highlights:
Wind Speeds:
- Southern and central atolls: 17–27 mph.
- Northern atolls: 13–23 mph.
- In-cloud winds: Intensifying to 40–55 mph.
Ocean Conditions:
- Turbulent seas across the northern atolls.
- More severe disturbances in southern and central atolls.
Lightning Activity:
- Likely in the southern and central regions, accompanied by turbulent weather.
The MET has warned that these conditions could create hazardous situations for ocean travel and has urged residents, particularly those planning sea journeys, to stay vigilant and updated on weather advisories.
The Maldives Meteorological Service will continue to closely monitor the situation and provide timely updates to ensure public safety. Residents are advised to make informed decisions and exercise caution during this period of unsettled weather.
