The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) suffered a major setback tonight as it failed to gather a significant crowd for its much-publicized meeting at the Carnival area in Male'. Despite extensive efforts to mobilize supporters from across the Maldives, only around 750 people were present when the event commenced.
The MDP had invested heavily in promoting the gathering, organizing motorcycle rallies in Male', Hulhumale', and several islands, while also covering travel and accommodation costs for attendees. However, their efforts did not yield the expected turnout, leaving large sections of the Carnival area empty even as the rally began.
People attending the event blames growing discontent among MDP supporters for the declining support. A former MDP parliamentarian from the 19th People's Majlis, speaking anonymously, stated that many supporters had lost faith in the party's leadership. "MDP had five years to deliver meaningful change, but they failed to improve anything. Supporters believe no positive change can come while the same failed leaders remain in power," the former MP said.
The Rally's promotion was also marred by controversy, as MDP leadership issued inflammatory remarks hinting at potential harm to President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, referencing the fate of former President Mohamed Amin. This rhetoric has drawn widespread criticism and raised concerns about the party's approach as opposition.
The low attendance and widespread dissatisfaction among supporters highlight the challenges facing MDP as it struggles to rebuild its credibility and relevance in Maldivian politics.
