Only 48 people attended the rally organized by the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) in Malé last night, which was held to protest the government’s alleged negligence in addressing land and housing concerns for Malé residents.
The MDP had promoted the rally extensively over the past several days, describing it as a major gathering to raise the voice of the people on housing issues. Some civil society organizations aligned with the MDP had also announced their participation. However, the event saw low public turnout.
Several MDP parliamentarians spoke at the rally, reiterating the party’s stance that the government has failed to fulfill its housing pledges.
According to the party, the rally was held as part of the preparations for a larger event planned for November 17.
