President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has reassured Maldivian citizens that subsidies, the national health insurance scheme Aasandha, and retirement pensions will not be reduced. Instead, he affirmed the government’s commitment to improving these essential services.
Speaking during a meeting with residents of Aa. Mathiveri as part of his tour of Aa. Atoll and K. Atoll, the President emphasized his administration's focus on enhancing citizens' income without compromising current benefits.
“In the future, we will not cut any subsidies that citizens are receiving, we will not cut Aasandha, and we will not cut retirement pensions. In fact, we will improve them further,” President Muizzu stated.
He outlined the government's strategy to refine the subsidy system by addressing inefficiencies and curbing unjustified expenses. Among the proposed reforms are measures to prevent the misuse of Aasandha services and the sale of medicines at inflated prices.
"Some medicines are being sold in the Maldives with a profit margin of over 1,000 percent. This is evident even when looking at the 250 most commonly sold medicines," the President highlighted.
Dr. Muizzu further noted that the government’s approach to economic and infrastructural development prioritizes fiscal responsibility, avoiding money printing and bankruptcy risks while driving sustainable progress.
The President’s statements underline his administration's dedication to maintaining and improving essential public services, ensuring long-term benefits for all Maldivians.
