Marine researchers have unveiled the discovery of a new fish species, Chromis abadhah, unique to the Maldives. This remarkable find was confirmed following the collection and analysis of four specimens in December 2022. Advanced diving techniques, including mixed-gas, closed-circuit rebreathers, enabled researchers to explore mesophotic reefs and identify this species.
The new fish, measuring just 6.9 centimetres, is closely related to Chromis woodsi, a species found in the coastal waters of the western Indian Ocean. It has been documented across eight locations spanning a 180-kilometre stretch from Faadhippolhu to Dhaalu Atoll, suggesting a broad distribution within the Maldivian Archipelago.
The discovery is part of a collaborative ichthyological project between the California Academy of Sciences, the Maldives Marine Research Institute, and Rolex. Between January 2022 and October 2023, researchers conducted surveys across 21 locations in five atolls, reaching depths of up to 150 metres. Several previously unidentified species were uncovered, with Chromis abadhah being the first to be formally described.
This discovery highlights the richness of the Maldives’ mesophotic ecosystems, which remain largely unexplored. The project underscores the importance of studying these habitats, which are increasingly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change and human activities.
