The Maldives Marine Research Institute (MMRI) has said that coral reefs are turning white due to warming sea levels.
MMRI has said that the satellite and information service of the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has predicted that the sea temperatures will warm further in the next nine weeks.
The temperature is currently at warning level and the effects of whitening of coral reefs are expected to reach alert level two in the ninth week, the agency said.
The agency has asked people to report any instances they notice of coral whitening and its effects.
