The Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation, Mohamed Ameen, has announced that Maldivian, the national airline of the Maldives, will commence operations using wide-body aircraft starting January 17, 2025. This marks a significant milestone for the nation's aviation sector.
Speaking on PSM News' Raajje Miadhu program, the Minister disclosed that the A330 wide-body aircraft, acquired with government support, has undergone all required preparations in Europe and is currently in Singapore for livery customisation. The livery work is scheduled to be completed by December 31, 2024, after which the aircraft is expected to arrive in the Maldives on January 7, 2025.
The introduction of wide-body services is part of the government’s initiative to enhance the capacity and reach of Maldivian’s operations. The A330 aircraft, capable of seating approximately 300 passengers, is expected to significantly contribute to the tourism sector by bringing a higher number of tourists to the Maldives on each trip. The Minister highlighted that this development aligns with the government’s broader economic objectives, promising substantial benefits for the entire nation.
Additionally, Minister Ameen revealed plans to introduce a second wide-body aircraft by mid-2025. He emphasized that the launch of wide-body aircraft services is a key promise fulfilled by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, demonstrating the administration's commitment to advancing the country’s aviation capabilities.
