The Government of Maldives is formulating a comprehensive five-year master plan aimed at controlling tobacco usage across the nation. The initiative, announced by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, seeks to ensure a well-structured and strategic approach to tobacco control efforts.
Health Minister Abdulla Nazim revealed at a press conference that the plan is being developed in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) and will include input from relevant authorities, local councils, and the public to maximize its effectiveness.
A key feature of the plan is the introduction of an award system to recognize individuals and communities actively working towards a tobacco-free society. Winning islands will receive financial assistance to support social initiatives, further incentivizing collective action. The government also aims to provide free tobacco cessation treatments at health centers on every island as part of the plan.
The initiative builds on the government's ongoing anti-tobacco campaign, "Dhafaraa," which has been conducted in Noonu, Thaa, Laamu, and Seenu Atolls to date. These efforts underline the administration's commitment to reducing tobacco usage and mitigating its harmful effects on public health.
By aligning its strategy with WHO recommendations and fostering grassroots participation, the government aims to make significant strides towards a healthier and tobacco-free Maldives.
