MDP Leadership Rivalry Intensifies as Shahid and Fayyaz Compete for 2028 Presidential Ticket

The race for the Maldivian Democratic Party's (MDP) 2028 presidential ticket has escalated into a visible contest between Party President Abdulla Shahid and Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail, with both leaders ramping up engagement efforts. Shahid's activities come amidst increasing rivalry with MDP Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail, who has already made similar public engagements to solidify his campaign.
The rivalry came to public attention when Shahid expressed dissatisfaction in a party national council WhatsApp group over the lack of communication regarding Fayyaz’s recent campaign activities. This was sparked by Fayyaz’s visit to the Malé fish market and nearby establishments, which prompted widespread praise from MDP members on social media. Shahid questioned why he, as the party president, was not informed or included in these efforts.
In response, Fayyaz formally announced his intention to contest the party primaries, stating his ambition to secure the MDP's nomination for the 2028 presidential race. He indirectly criticized Shahid, remarking on "too many children" within the party, in what appeared to be a veiled reference to his rival.
To counter Fayyaz’s growing grassroots momentum, Shahid conducted his own outreach efforts in Hulhumalé, engaging with taxi drivers during the day and hosting meetings at local tea shops in the evening. Prominent Shahid supporters, including Ahmed Abdulla, a former MP for Baa Atoll constituency, and several MDP members aligned with his faction, were seen promoting Shahid’s campaign on social media.
The conflict has highlighted a deepening divide within the MDP, with Shahid's faction and Fayyaz's supporters hosting separate campaign events. Both leaders appear committed to consolidating their respective bases in the lead-up to the party’s primaries.
This intensifying internal competition will likely shape the party's strategy as it prepares for the 2028 elections. The outcome of this leadership race could have significant implications for the MDP’s future direction and political influence.
