The Maldivian government has nominated Fuad Taufeeq, former President of the Election Commission, to serve as the country’s next Ambassador to Thailand. The proposal, submitted by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, was presented during today’s parliamentary session by Secretary General Fathimath Niusha. Fuad's appointment is now under review by the Parliament's Foreign Relations Committee.
Fuad, whose second term as Election Commission President concluded on November 23, 2024, has had a distinguished career in public service spanning more than four decades. Under the Election Commission Act, members cannot serve more than two terms, and Fuad's tenure exemplifies his dedication to the democratic process.
Having first joined the interim election commission after its establishment under the 2008 Constitution, Fuad served as its president from November 2009 to March 2014. He was reappointed to the commission in November 2019 and resumed the presidency in 2021, steering the electoral body through crucial elections in the Maldives.
In addition to his election commission roles, Fuad has significantly contributed to state and government operations since beginning his career in 1978, following his education in statistics. His expertise and leadership have made him a respected figure in Maldivian governance.
