The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) is facing significant internal strife as competition for the 2028 presidential primaries escalates. A recent incident involving Party Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail and President Abdulla Shahid has brought simmering tensions within the party to the forefront.
On a visit to the fish market area, Fayyaz, accompanied by senior party members Ibrahim Nazil and Mohamed Rasheed (Bigey), engaged with fishermen to discuss their concerns and shared the interaction on the party’s official 'X' (formerly Twitter) account. However, this initiative sparked a backlash from Shahid, who raised concerns in a WhatsApp group of the party’s national assembly, questioning why such activities were conducted without his knowledge.
In response, Fayyaz dismissed the criticism, suggesting the party’s 'X' handle should be revised and referred to Shahid with a dismissive comment. Shortly after, Fayyaz used the same group to announce his candidacy for the 2028 presidential primary.
The controversy underscores the growing divide within the MDP, with factions forming around prominent contenders. Currently, the presidential ticket is being contested by Fayyaz Ismail, Abdulla Shahid, Malé Mayor Adam Azim, Ahmed Saleem (Hoarafushi Salle), and former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
The increasing factionalism has also been reflected in the party’s online platforms. In the party’s official website dominated by Fayyaz, other leaders are minimally represented, hinting at deeper divisions. Despite efforts to project unity, the MDP appears to be struggling to maintain cohesion as competition for the presidential nomination heats up.
