Fayyaz Ismail Announces Candidacy for MDP’s 2028 Presidential Primary

Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail has formally declared his candidacy for the party’s presidential primary ahead of the 2028 elections. In a message shared with MDP’s national lawmakers via WhatsApp, Fayyaz confirmed his decision to contest and sought the support of party members to secure the nomination.
This announcement comes amid growing internal competition, with MDP President Abdulla Shahid, Malé Mayor Adam Azim, and former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih also positioning themselves as contenders for the party's presidential ticket. Sources within the party suggest Fayyaz’s decision was influenced by the increasing momentum gained by his rivals.
Fayyaz had previously expressed interest in running for the presidency but had refrained from committing until now. His formal declaration signals his intent to solidify his standing within the party as the race gains intensity.
Fayyaz, a prominent figure in the MDP, has been instrumental in advancing the party's agenda under President Solih’s administration. He has been vocal about the government’s achievements, particularly in economic reforms, healthcare improvements, and bolstering social welfare. His campaign is expected to center on these accomplishments while presenting his vision for the nation’s future.
As the MDP moves closer to its primary elections, Fayyaz’s candidacy adds to an already dynamic contest, shaping the party’s roadmap for the 2028 presidential elections.
