A Great Contribution to China-Maldives Friendship”: Ambassador Wang on Bright Journey’s 5,000 Patient Milestone in Eye Care

The Chinese Ambassador to the Maldives, Wang Lixin, highlighted the success and impact of the "Bright Journey" eye care initiative, which has provided essential medical services to nearly 5,000 Maldivians since its launch in 2016. Ambassador Wang’s comments were made on social media platform X, following her attendance at the latest eye camp in Thinadhoo.
The two-day camp in Thinadhoo was staffed by a skilled team of Chinese ophthalmologists, who offered free consultations to around 180 local patients. This outreach reflects China's continued commitment to supporting healthcare initiatives in the Maldives. Ambassador Wang expressed optimism for sustained collaboration between the two countries, noting that close cooperation in healthcare would continue to yield significant benefits for local communities.
Since its inception, the Bright Journey program has had a transformative impact across the Maldives. In its early days, the program saw Chinese ophthalmologists conducting 107 cataract surgeries at Hulhumale Hospital in 2016. Since then, the initiative has expanded into regular camps that offer a variety of services, including free eye screenings, cataract surgeries, and essential medical equipment to underserved areas.
A milestone in the partnership was achieved in 2020 with the establishment of the China-Maldives International Ophthalmology Center, which continues to serve as a sustainable hub for eye care in the Maldives. Ambassador Wang praised Bright Journey as a "great contribution to promoting China-Maldives friendship," expressing hope that it would continue to benefit Maldivians in the years ahead.
