Chinese Expert Team Begins Feasibility Study for Road Redevelopment in Malé and Vilimalé

A team of experts appointed by the Chinese government has arrived in the Maldives to commence a feasibility study aimed at the redevelopment of roads in Malé City and its suburban area, Vilimalé. This project, part of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s campaign promises, seeks to improve infrastructure and facilitate safer, more efficient transport in these bustling areas.
The team arrived in Malé on Sunday, with an introductory session led by State Minister for Infrastructure Tho’aam Mohamed on Monday. The Infrastructure Ministry’s technical team participated, laying the groundwork for a collaborative and comprehensive study.
On Tuesday, the Chinese experts began stakeholder consultations, site surveys, and extensive data collection, all essential for understanding the specific needs and challenges of the project areas. The team will continue these efforts until November 21, after which the findings will serve as a foundation for the project’s subsequent design and planning stages. This development effort is funded by the China International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA), also known as China Aid.
The feasibility study agreement was formalized in July through a letter of exchange between the Maldives’ Infrastructure Ministry and China Aid, underscoring a continued partnership between the Maldives and China in developmental ventures.
With this project, Maldivian officials and residents are looking forward to the creation of safer and more accessible roadways, enhancing daily life for citizens and supporting the region’s growing infrastructure needs.
