The Maldives has joined other nations at the 47th session of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) Working Group, which commenced Monday at the Palais des Nations in Geneva. This session, dedicated to assessing the human rights records of 14 countries, will run for two weeks, concluding on November 15.
The Maldives’ delegation, led by Dr. Salma Rasheed, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Maldives to the UN Office in Geneva, includes several prominent diplomats: Counsellor Adam Hamid, Counsellor Aminath Shifaya Ibrahim, Second Secretary Maryam Fathika Fayaz, and Attaché Raaidh Saeedh. The team will actively participate in the review process, providing constructive recommendations in alignment with the Maldives government’s human rights priorities.
During this session, the human rights records of Albania, Bhutan, Brunei Darussalam, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Costa Rica, Côte d’Ivoire, Dominica, Equatorial Guinea, Ethiopia, North Korea, Nicaragua, Norway, Portugal, and Qatar will undergo examination. The Maldives has been selected to serve as part of the troika—a group of three states responsible for facilitating each state’s review—for Qatar’s human rights assessment.
The UPR, a critical state-driven process, allows UN member states to present progress on their human rights commitments and receive recommendations for improvement from fellow members. This review cycle, the fourth since the UPR's inception, began in November 2022 and will conclude in 2027.
The Maldivian Foreign Ministry expressed its commitment to promoting human rights on the global stage and noted the Maldives’ active role within the Human Rights Council in supporting other nations’ progress toward their human rights goals.
