President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu announced upcoming legal reforms to the Maldives Penal Code aimed at strengthening the country’s efforts to investigate and prevent corruption and illicit enrichment within government authorities. In a social media post, President Muizzu revealed plans to propose amendments to Section 515 of the Penal Code, which addresses illicit gains, with the proposal scheduled for submission to Parliament next week.
The planned reforms will empower investigative bodies to scrutinize a broad range of government officials, including the President, Cabinet members, Members of Parliament, judges, and civil employees, both current and former, who are suspected of amassing illicit wealth. President Muizzu emphasized that these changes reflect his administration’s commitment to rooting out corruption across all levels of government.
In his recent inaugural address, President Muizzu reiterated his dedication to transparency and fairness, pledging to lead a government that actively combats corruption in every form. The proposed reforms represent a step towards fulfilling his promise to establish integrity within public service and ensure accountability for all officials.
