President Mohammed Muizzu has reiterated his commitment to maintaining the independence of state institutions, stating that there will be no influence from the government on any state body, independent institution, or elected body. In a recent social media post, the President emphasized that he has never interfered in such matters and has no intention of doing so in the future.
While asserting the government's stance on non-interference, President Muizzu acknowledged the need for reforms within state powers and institutions to ensure justice and equity, regardless of individual interests. He expressed his commitment to proposing necessary amendments to laws and regulations to foster an environment of fairness and accountability.
The President's remarks come in response to criticism from the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) regarding a proposed bill that would grant him the authority to appoint the heads of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) and the Elections Commission from among their appointed members. Notably, the MDP had previously considered similar changes during their time in power, and under the proposed framework, while the commissions will still be appointed by parliament, the President will have the final say in selecting their leadership.
President Muizzu's statement aims to clarify the government's position amid ongoing discussions about the balance of power and accountability within the nation's institutions.
